When I was eight years old, I wrote my first song. Inspired by the songs and stories of my father and grandmother, the words just poured out of me. It was obvious to me, even then, that I had found my passion. Growing up in Kentucky, surrounded by a family full of storytellers and musicians, songs became more than music; they became a way of life.
For me, music is about connection. It’s about taking the stories we collect through experience and conversation—the struggles, the laughter, the love—and shining a light on how universal these stories are. Whether I’m playing in someone’s living room or performing onstage, my hope is always the same: to make people feel something.
Time and time again, I’ve stepped off the stage after a show to someone sharing how they saw themselves in the words I sang. Moments like that are why I do this. It still amazes me how many people share common experiences and how music can be the bridge to bring these people together.
Those personal connections mean more to me than any other part of my music career. More than awards, sales, or notoriety, the opportunity to tell someone’s story or give someone hope through their hard times are the most fulfilling moments I can have. Every story and every song is a thread, tying one person’s experience to the rest of the world.
